THERAPY WITH CHILDREN

Under 10-years-old

Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults. Because play is a child's natural medium of expression, play therapy utilizes play to help children express their feelings more easily through the use of toys instead of words.

The Association for Play Therapy (APT) defines play therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development."

To learn more about how play therapy is an evidence based treatment, check APT's website at www.a4pt.org.

Therapy with preadolescents, adolescents, and groups.

PREADOLESCENTS

Ages 10-12

Therapy with preadolescents can vary depending on the child. We will use a developmental approach to ensure therapy meets their needs, whether it be play, art, activity, or talk in one of our activity rooms.

ADOLESCENTS

Ages 13-17

Therapy with adolescents can also vary depending on the individual. After we learn more about your teen, we will form a developmental approach to meet their needs, whether it be art, activity, or talk.

GROUPS

with Children and Teens

We offer a variety of groups to meet the needs of our clients, including social skills and support groups. Each group is modified specifically for the needs of the group members.

REGISTERED PLAY THERAPIST

What does “Registered Play Therapist” Mean?

Registered Play Therapists are credentialed through the National Association for Play Therapy. To be credentialed, play therapists must go through a rigorous training program which includes at least 150 approved play therapy education hours, 500 hours of supervised play therapy experience that includes at least 50 hours of supervision by a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor. CHILD CENTERED PLAY THERAPIST

What is a child centered play therapist?

Therapists who are certified in child centered play therapy (CCPT) utilize the CCPT model which is designed to be administered by mental health professionals who have received extensive training and supervision in the CCPT protocol. To learn more about this evidence based treatment model, see https://cpt.unt.edu.
